Yesterday I needed a bit of a mental health day.

After spending days writing scenes depicting the final moments of hundreds of passengers and crew aboard the SS Brother Jonathan on July 30, 1865, I found I needed to step away from the script for a little while. Researching history is one thing. Writing those moments in a way that honors the real people who lived them is something else entirely.

One of the realities of independent AI filmmaking is managing the tools we use. Between our two OpenArt.AI accounts, we receive monthly image and video generation credits that don't roll over. If we don't use them before the end of the month, they're simply gone. Rather than let those credits go to waste, I spent yesterday creating a series of short, high-definition test videos and images that we'll be able to use as our productions move forward.

The clip below is a five-second recreation of travelers leaving the East Coast in 1849, heading west in search of opportunity during the California Gold Rush. It depicts passengers crossing the Panama Isthmus before there was a functional railroad line.

It's a small glimpse into the workflow behind our films—and a reminder that even on days when I'm taking a break from writing, we're still finding ways to move our projects one step closer to the screen.
